All about books: Reading, Writing, Editing

A friend from another part of the state emailed me last year that a short story I’d polished for him–one he’d previously submitted to a magazine–had been accepted by that same magazine after “you worked your magic.” He encouraged me to do the same thing for other writers.

What I did for him was line and copy editing, something I do well, which includes:

  • Grammar, punctuation, and spelling
  • Weak or overused words, or wordiness
  • Passive voice
  • Inconsistencies in verb tense, point of view, or logic
  • Awkward sentences; paragraph and sentence flow
  • Lack of tension–both internal and external, and inadequate or missing hooks
  • Flashbacks that don’t work
  • Action scenes that don’t work

I also do substantive or structural editing. If you have plot problems, a sagging middle section, or need help with character creation or your story arc, I can probably help you. But that takes more time and is thus more expensive.

I enjoy helping others with their stories, and try to keep rates as low as possible, while still allowing  time for my own writing. Cost will depend on the length of the material and the amount of work required. I’ll ask for a few pages, both to help me calculate cost, and to show you what I would do with the material.

We go forward with a project only when we both agree, with the understanding that nobody can guarantee your work will be published.
